Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I apologize for the silence following the convention. I was supposed to send something out, but I became consumed with my own performing arts endeavor. I must learn to juggle my responsibilities!
We had a convention! It was a fun convention! You should have been there! And you CAN be there... next time...
TENTATIVE DATE FOR NEXT CONVENTION: July 15th - 18th, 2011 (in the Boston area)
This will remain tentative for ONE WEEK following this email. If you can't make it on that date, but you could make it some other time around then, LET US KNOW!
We have lots of things we want to tell you! Lots of things we want to share. So we're going to try something new: microblogging!

The Week of Philanthropy is on!
At the moment, most of the communication is being done via Facebook (Since that is where most people tend to respond to things), but if you would like to participate and are not on Facebook, please drop myself or weepingspider

VILLAINS RECITAL at Convention!!! :-D
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Our next national convention will be happening in Boston, MA on July 17th - 19th this year! Mark your calendars!
This convention will have a RECITAL, of course. That's not unusual for a Kappa convention. But this year, the recital will be THEMED. Our theme is... VILLAINS! There will be opportunities for all kinds of performances at the convention, but we'd particularly like to encourage villain-themed performances at the recital.
Also, this year we'd like to put in extra effort to make sure we put our best foot forward, performance-wise, for the non-members who will be in our audience. So ... START PLANNING YOUR PERFORMANCES NOW! What I would really appreciate from everyone at this time is a list of performances you're thinking of. It doesn't have to be even close to final and it is in no way binding. Just let me know what ideas are floating around in your head and any basic requirements for those ideas (accompaniment, additional singers / actors, sets, A/V equipment, etc...). Sending me a _little_ info is much better than sending me none!
If you're _looking_ for performance ideas or for performers to collaborate with, let me know that too! I may be able to help match people and ideas. :-)
Let's make this our best recital to date by getting the ball rolling NOW!!!
Ian K. Schleifer
P.S. Let me know that you want to be involved with the upcoming Week of Philanthropy, even at a cursory level. (Hint: You DO want to be involved!) Current Mood: naughty

WEEK OF PHILANTHROPY
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have taken on the task of organizing a "Week of Philanthropy" for Kappa Gamma Psi Fraternity! And it's going to be awesome. The week will tentatively be some time in April of 2009. A small group of volunteers, myself included, is going to work hard to make it easier for you to give to your communities during the WoP and beyond. Here are some of the ideas already on my list...
- Although a small group of volunteers will be working on things for a while in advance, major "gearing up" for the WoP will begin about a month prior to the week itself.
- During that month, we will...
a) Ask members for some of their favorite stories of philanthropy (volunteering, donating money, donating goods, donating blood, etc...).
b) Solicit donations of items to be auctioned for charity by the fraternity (can be sent to me for auctioning on Ebay, if weight, bulk, and value are reasonable).
c) Survey members about where they will be during the WoP, when they will be available, how much time, money , or goods they might be willing to donate, and what types of volunteering and donation they are interested in.
d) Research opportunities for philanthropy for each participating member, generating a report for them, and even actively helping to facilitate volunteering.
- During the WoP, we will...
a) Auction items on Ebay, giving all proceeds to a selected non-profit organization (Ebay has a special mechanism for that!).
b) Keep track of the time, money, goods, and blood that our members donate in connection with the WoP.
c) Post frequent updates on our progress to the website.
d) Send daily emails to those who opted into receiving them including updates as well as suggestions for philanthropic opportunities that members could pursue during the week and beyond. Also to include philanthropy stories we received.
e) Keep in touch with participants, offering logistical help, where possible, to make their philanthropic efforts more successful.
- At the end of the week, we will...
a) Announce the tally of how much money was donated, how much funds were raised for charity, what goods were donated, how many member-hours were volunteered, etc....
b) Publicly recognize all members who participated.
c) Give an award and special recognition to a member who showed outstanding devotion to the effort during the week!
- I will be seeking partnerships between Kappa Gamma Psi and philanthropic organizations such as the HandOn Network and Global Vision International to get you benefits like discounts on philanthropy related expenditures with your Kappa Gamma Psi member card.
WHAT I WANT FROM YOU FOR NOW...
I have a lot of ideas down already (more than I've outlined above, even). But ... I WANT _YOU'RE_ IDEAS!!! Give them to me. Now. How can I make the Week of Philanthropy even better? What would make you more inclined to participate? What would make it more rewarding for you?
Ian K. Schleifer
P.S. I'd like to encourage all of you to choose active membership in Kappa Gamma Psi by paying the optional national dues of $20 (lasts a whole year!).
We want your participation! But also, we can do the WoP better if we have a budget. ;-)
Plus there are a lot of other things we can do if we have a budget too! And as an active member, you can help decide what we do together!

Kappa mailing list
It has come to my attention that due to webhost issues, the main Kappa mailing list changed and not everyone ended up on the new list. So I just wanted to post the link here:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KappaGammaPsi/
Request membership in that Yahoo! Group please! And then check out the recent threads of discussion concerning Iota Chapter and the future of Kappa.

Comics and stuff
Hey ya'll. Josh Breidbart, your friendly neighborhood alumni secretary here with some performance arts related stuff (OK, that's really stretching it, but Kappa's have always been supportive of everyone's endeavors, so I thought I'd give it a shot here).
For those of you who weren't on my facebook friend list, or haven't been in earshot of my excited rampage the last few weeks, I recently completed a comic book. You can read the whole thing here The comic is called Fenix Gear
An issue 2 is currently in the works, and while some have agreed to help (such as fellow Kappa Carolyn Fowlkes, who is doing a mini-issue with me), I have yet to secure a penciller for the art of the main comic. If anyone reads this and likes this style of comedy and adventure, give me a hollar.
Hope all is well, and happy new year.

Kappa: thinking of you!
I just downed a good dose of Day Quill after waking up earlier to my wretched cough which kept me awake half the night.
I tossed and turned the other half of the night dreaming/worrying about the convention which I don't get to be at.
My prayers and thoughts are with you all! Work hard up there! Be constructive! Be professionals! Be the family and the team I know you can be!
And if it gets cloudy, remember, the purposes matter most. They are the guiding star of our group. Stick to those in matters of Kappa and you've got the answer. Current Mood: hopeful

From an alum...
I was feeling nostalgic tonight and stumbled upon this group. I was at IC from 90-94 and pledged in Spring of 91. My nickname was Amycat and I bequeathed "Cheez Whiz" and the "shocked face" when I left.
I'm currently living in Massachusetts with my husband and kids. I homeschool my sons, who are 7 and 12, and work part-time as a librarian. I sing in my church choir and do community theatre when I have time.
I'm not that active on LJ, so I'll invite you to look me up on Facebook. If there isn't already a Kappa group there, I'd be happy to start one.

Alumna in Ithaca next week
Given that I live in Seattle and am flying to New York State for a wedding this week, I really don't have the cash to come back in November for the convention. :(
BUT, I will be in Ithaca for a couple of days at the beginning of next week. :)
Any chance of meeting current Iotas?

This is for Kappa
After recent events in Virginia its hard to know how to feel, or what to write to those of you who are still in college, but I feel compelled to do so. Kappa is a family. We all have family in college now. Higher learning was dealt a tremendous blow this week to the feeling of security all students should have on campuses everywhere.
I am reminded by our hymn of Kappa's special gift to the college community, and feel it most appropriate to remind all of you -
"He who is upright, kind and free from error, needs not the aid of arms or men to guide him, safely he moves, a child through guilty terror, strong in his virtue,".
Because this is our hymn, our creed, our song to sing, we embody a light most precious in dark times such as these. We as Kappas remember that if we are doing our job in the world to be the best people we can be, we don't need to lean on crutches like guns and we don't rely on others to make our decisions for us. We will never be lone gunmen. We will never be as lost as this person was because as Kappas we aspire to better our own virtues, and we gain a sense of peace from that. This simple aspiration to be good people, beats back the tides of guilt, fear and despair in our lives. I truly wish this poor soul had a home to go to like Kappa because perhaps if he did then he and thirty three of his classmates would still be alive. That is the safety we live for ourselves and the safety we can offer everyone whose lives we touch.
Remember our hymn. Lead by example. Love everyone. You have a gift. You have a mission. You have a family. Its not just a song if you live it.

When I was in Kappa I heard about a few people - some of them Kappas - who tried to start a porn club at IC. Apparently it would have happened, but no one could find an advisor. Perhaps one of the other alumni know more first hand about the club, or potential club. I think it goes well with the spirit of KGP (unadulterated art). It would not, however, have been affiliated with the frat in any way (at least not any more than ivory tower or asic :-P). I found out today that Columbia has a bdsm club. I thought some of the alumni in particular might find this interesting.http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cv/
